The Queensland Childcare Service (QCCS), which has a centre in Springfield, is celebrating sustainable living and healthy eating through its Veggie Fun Program, aligning with World Food Day which took place October 16.
The Veggie Fun Program, led by QCCS’s in-house Accredited Practising Dietitian, Jim Arrowgros, takes place monthly and focuses on teaching children the importance of sustainable living.
Children engage in activities such as composting, tending to herb and vegetable gardens, and water play.
“The Veggie Fun program promotes healthy eating through hands-on, vegetable-based learning experiences,” Jim said.
“By discussing, growing, preparing, and eating the vegetable of the month, children learn the ‘farm-to-plate’ process.”
Each session allows children to plant seeds, prepare meals using a featured vegetable, and share the food with educators.
Participating classrooms receive additional resources with growing tips and fun facts to deepen learning.
Jim highlighted that the program not only teaches sustainability but also encourages creativity, physical activity, and self-confidence among young learners.
Jim emphasised the importance of fostering healthy eating habits early, noting that less than 10% of Australians meet the recommended daily intake of vegetables.
“Simply eating more vegetables can significantly improve physical and mental health,” he said.
