Funding commitment for Springfield youth space

The Springfield Central Community Centre is set to receive $440,000 in funding for the development of a dedicated youth space, thanks to a commitment by the State Member for Jordan Charis Mullen.

The pledge, made ahead of the upcoming October election, would be part of a re-elected Labor Government plan to support local infrastructure.

The funding will be used to complete the top level of the Ipswich City Council-owned Springfield Central Community Centre, which has remained unfinished since 2020.

The YMCA currently manages the facility, offering a variety of community activities including school holiday programs and sporting events.

Charis spoke about the need for more spaces where young people in the Greater Springfield area can engage in positive activities and access support services.

The new Youth Space would allow the YMCA to expand its services and provide additional capacity for youth programs.

Another key aspect of the proposal is the potential introduction of an Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) service for families at Springfield Central State School.

Currently, the school lacks an on-site OSHC service, and Charis hopes the new youth space could accommodate this need.

“This would be a win-win,” Charis said.

“Giving young people in our community their own safe space while also supporting local working families with a much-needed service.”

If re-elected, Labor would provide the funding directly to Ipswich City Council to finalise the project, offering further opportunities for youth engagement in the Springfield area.
