The Riverview Recycling and Refuse Centre will host a free household hazardous waste drop-off day on Sunday, 22 September, providing Greater Springfield residents with a safe and responsible way to dispose of dangerous chemicals and materials.

The event, which will run from 7am to 5pm, allows residents to discard items such as paint, pesticides, acids, and pool chemicals without incurring a disposal fee.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding emphasised the importance of the initiative, encouraging residents to take advantage of the opportunity to declutter their homes and safely dispose of hazardous waste.

“We encourage residents to clean out their home, garden shed, or pool area in preparation for Council’s free drop-off day,” Mayor Harding said.

“Some types of household waste require special disposal arrangements due to their properties, which can be flammable, corrosive, explosive, or toxic to humans and the environment.”

The drop-off day allows residents to dispose of up to 100 litres of paint and 20 litres or kilograms of other waste types free of charge.

Accepted items include domestic BBQ gas bottles, marine distress flares, acids, alkalis, brake fluid, coolant, fuel, glue, grease, herbicides, pesticides, pool chemicals, rust inhibitors, solvents, thinners, stains, varnish, and wood preservatives.

Mayor Harding highlighted the environmental benefits of the event, noting that safely disposing of hazardous waste contributes to cleaner living spaces and helps protect the local environment.

“This is an opportunity to create a cleaner living environment while disposing of unwanted waste safely and keeping our environment clean,” she said.

The event is open to Ipswich residents only, and proof of residency will be required upon arrival.

All hazardous waste listed will be accepted free of charge, but any other types of waste will incur the usual disposal fees.

Residents are reminded to transport their waste safely by keeping chemicals in their original containers, separating different types of materials, and securing them in their vehicles during transport.
