Goodna is preparing for a vibrant weekend as jacaranda trees blanket the suburb in purple, marking the return of the Goodna Jacaranda Festival from October 25 to 27 at Evan Marginson Park.
Deputy Mayor and Division 2 Councillor Nicole Jonic described the three-day event as a celebration of community, culture, and local talent.
“The Goodna Jacaranda Festival is an iconic event that attracts not only locals but visitors from across the region,” Cr Jonic said.
“Council is proud to support the festival, contributing $5,000 through the Community Events Funding program and providing $9,800 of in-kind support for essential services like bins and toilets.”
The 2024 festival will feature a range of attractions, including sideshow alley, food trucks, market stalls, community performances, and fireworks displays. School students and local artists will also take the stage throughout the event.
Division 2 Councillor Paul Tully highlighted the significance of Goodna’s jacaranda trees, which have become a symbol of the festival’s arrival.
“The jacaranda trees, some of which date back to 1932, are a testament to Goodna’s history and resilience,” Cr Tully said.
“These trees have withstood multiple floods over the years, including in 1955, 1974, and 2011.”
To preserve the legacy of the historic trees, the council recently planted 100 new jacarandas throughout the suburb and installed a commemorative plaque along Brisbane Terrace.
Festival president Mathew Taylor said the focus this year is on reconnecting with the event’s roots.
“After the challenges of COVID, we’re excited to restore the festival to its former glory, with an emphasis on community performances,” Mr. Taylor said.
“We can’t wait to welcome everyone back.”
The Goodna Jacaranda Festival will run from October 25 to 27.
