This weekend marks the beginning of a significant phase in the Redbank Plains Road upgrade, with a key section of the road set to close for intensive construction work.
The closure, which aims to accelerate progress on the council’s major road upgrade, is expected to benefit motorists in the long run.
Infrastructure, planning and assets committee chairperson councillor Andrew Antoniolli, announced that one lane of Redbank Plains Road will be closed to expedite construction, reducing the overall time needed for the project.
“Regular users of Redbank Plains Road know that council decided to remove the Stage 3 upgrade project from the former contractor Allroads when it became clear they could not complete the work,” Cr Antoniolli said.
“Council has now taken over the project, working with Dinmore-based contractor NARIC Civil to complete the next stages.”
The planned closure will affect Redbank Plains Road from Highbury Drive to Shannon Street.
This section will be closed from 7pm on Friday, June 28, until 5am on Monday, July 1, 2024.
Despite the closure, one lane will remain open at all times to minimise disruption.
“This weekend shutdown will tidy up parts of the project that were left when council assumed control, allowing further work to progress in a less disruptive way for motorists,” Cr Antoniolli said.
“Choosing a weekend and school holiday period aims to minimize disruption to residents and businesses.”
During the 50-hour lane closure, significant progress will be made, including the completion of Barry Drive intersection works and the asphalting of two northbound lanes on Barry Drive between Highbury Drive and Shannon Street.
This will allow the reopening of the two lanes from Highbury Drive to Shannon Street on Monday, July 1, keeping the project on track for its December 2024 completion.
Traffic arrangements from 7pm on Friday, June 28, to 5am on Monday, July 1, 2024, include:
- Northbound lane of Redbank Plains Road from Highbury Drive to Shannon Street diverted via local roads
- Eastbound heavy vehicles detouring along Jones Road
- Northbound light vehicles detouring at Barry Drive and rejoining at Shannon Street
A potential second weekend shutdown is planned from 7pm on Friday, July 5, to 5am on Monday, July 8, in case of unforeseen delays.
