Friendships form fast at a local seniors club, where residents from near and far come to chat over coffee, play cards and board games, and have a ball.
The Springfield Seniors Group runs on Monday mornings at the Bob Gibbs Oval Club House, and one of its organisers is inviting new guests to come along and give it a go.
“It’s just a friendship thing, really!” organiser Jenny Hawyes said.
“The seniors like to meet up and have a cuppa, and have a chat. We play games, we have guest speakers, we go on trips… It’s great!”

Club history
The non-profit club has been active for around 20 years, and – rather surprisingly – started out as a university project, courtesy of Jenny’s son.
The $4 entry cost covers tea, coffee, cakes, and biscuits – all home-made by volunteers – which helps fund their annual excursions, Jenny explained.
“Usually we go on two coach trips a year – sometimes three – and we also head out on local trips at least once a month.
“We’ve been out on the CityCat, [and we’ve] been to old buildings… Next week we’re going to the Elderflower Café and garden centre at the North Tivoli Nursery.”
Last September, Jordan MP Charis Mullen visited and also personally donated $500 to the club, acknowledging that funds had been limited in recent years particularly due to the pandemic.
Two of the group’s organisers, Gloria McDonald and Joe Buhagiar, were there to accept.
“Our club was very grateful for the donation and Ms Mullen’s visit was really appreciated,” Gloria said.
Joe volunteers his time at Ms Mullen’s office to conduct a free tax return service for people with lower incomes.
The Springfield Seniors Group meets Monday mornings – from 9:30am to around 12:00 midday – at the Bob Gibbs Oval Club House, at 8 Ashby Close, Springfield.
